Lidl shoppers praise £1.50 product that ‘could help a lot of people’ on low income

One bargain hunter shared details of a lesser-known Lidl product that they say “could help a lot of people”, and other shoppers were quick to agree.

As part of its commitment to reducing food waste, the budget retailer sells Too Good To Waste boxes which are full of fruit and vegetables that are “still good to use, but would have otherwise been thrown away”.

The 5kg boxes are priced at £1.50 and are normally found near the checkout area, subject to availability.

For families on a low budget, the boxes offer an opportunity to buy a large quantity of fruit or vegetables for a significantly reduced price.

One Lidl customer picked up a box and shared their experience on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group.

They wrote: “Just bought one of the Lidl fruit and veg boxes. Amazing for anyone on a budget. £1.50 and has absolutely tonnes in it! Under all that fruit was a bag stew veg mix, peppers, onions, sprouts, cauliflower and loads more. Perfect for families.”

Since being uploaded on Thursday, the post has amassed a staggering 8,500 likes — and more than 2,000 users left comments sharing their thoughts.

All of this was bought for just £1.50

One said: “They are brilliant for picking up on a Sunday roast day & fruit for packed lunches.”

“I buy these they are great for soups and juices,” a second commented.

Another bargain hunter wrote: “Love these. Sometimes you get a few soft bits but generally absolutely rammed with goodies. Gotta get in quick tho they sell out fast.”

“I get one when I go in, always excellent value,” posted a fourth.

A fifth stated: “I’ve seen them a lot in my Lidl they look good but I don’t buy them, I actually leave them for people who really need them, I’m not well off by any means but we don’t struggle to buy food, I have in the past so know how it feels.”

Some shoppers however shared less positive experiences the £1.50 fruit and veg boxes.

“Ours in our Lidl don’t look as good as that, yours looks amazing,” one user commented.

A second posted: “In my Lidl every time I check half of fruit/veg in boxes is rotten already so not worth even £1.50.”

“When I’ve looked in our Lidl it’s all going off mouldy strawberries, sprouting potatoes,” a third revealed.

Another agreed: “Seen these in my local Lidl on Tuesday and all the fruit and veg was black and rotten.”

In response to these comments, the original poster wrote: “I’m sorry to you who have bought them and they have been rubbish… but it’s £1.50! And could help a lot of people. That’s why I shared. And I’ve had a lot of them and they’ve been brilliant.”

Other members of the group agreed that the price of the product made it a good deal regardless.

One said: “The complaints on here though.. it’s £1.50 for a box.. strawberries on their own are usually £2 for a punnet. Come on.”

A second concurred: “I love these, yes it’s hit and miss with the quality but at £1.50 it’s still a bargain. I usually get one when I see it, especially at the moment with the rise in food costs and bills a penny saved is definitely worth it.”
